How to get the most out of your Hard Wax Oil - Fiddes Australia
Smart usage tips to stretch every tin further

Fiddes Hard Wax Oil is known for its durability, ease of use and beautiful finish. However, if you’re not handling it the right way, you could be using more than you need or shortening its shelf life. Whether you’re a seasoned professional or a weekend renovator, here are a few simple ways to make your Hard Wax Oil go further and work harder for you.

Apply Thin, Even Coats (Always)

Less is more when it comes to Hard Wax Oil. The formula is designed to penetrate and protect with two thin coats, no more, no less. Thick application won’t give you extra protection, in fact, it may lead to tackiness, uneven sheen, roller marks and longer drying times.

  • Use a 4mm microfibre roller or a smooth coat brush

  • Spread the oil thinly and evenly, don’t overload the surface

Applying thin means better coverage and a smoother finish, with less product used overall.

Scrape the Tin — Seriously

It might sound simple, but you’d be surprised how much product is left behind in a tin.

🔥 Hot Tip: Use a clean, flexible kitchen spatula (silicone is ideal) to scrape around the inner walls and bottom of the tin. This lets you collect every last drop. Especially useful when you’re near the end of a project or working from an older tin.

Store Leftovers in StopLoss Bags

Once exposed to air, oil begins to oxidise, even if the lid is hammered back on tightly. That means leftover oil in the tin can skin over or thicken up between uses.

The best way to prevent this? Use a StopLoss Bag.

  • Perfect for storing partial tins between coats or jobs – Tests consistently show over 99% preservation of your coating, even after two years storage.

  • Reusable, environmentally friendly (no more disposal of spoiled finishes) and they save you money by reducing wastage.

Thin it Out (If Needed)

Over time, if storing your Hard Wax Oil in the tin and that tin has been open for a while, Hard Wax Oil can thicken slightly due to the coating oxidising. If that happens, don’t toss it.

You can thin it with a small amount of White Spirits to return it to an ideal working consistency.

Ensure you are stiring thoroughly before use and NEVER use water or other solvents to thin down your Hard Wax Oil, only White Spirits.

Apply thin coats only — you’ll use less and get better results
