A rag gives you control over how much tint stays on the timber and how evenly it's worked into the grain. Diluted with clear Hard Wax Oil Mixing tinted with clear softens the strength of the pigment. It's how you dial a colour back when the straight tint is more than you want, and it lets you build tone gradually rather than committing in one hit.
